Valve Springs for American Diesel Engines
Only premium grade springs will meet Empower’s demanding specifications for American diesel & heavy duty gas engines
The valve spring is one of the most critical small parts in the cylinder head. Its ability to perform hundreds of millions cyclic compressions and retain its integrity starts with clean base material. The choice of material is based on OEM requirements and fatigue life through extensive cycling. Empower valve springs use a specified clean wire which is tested and qualified at the foundry prior to production. If the OEM spring doesn’t meet the standard, the Empower spring will be an upgraded wire. Surface strength is enhanced through shot peening, ensuring all springs meet or exceed the OEM specification.
Some spring designs, depending on the application, have ‘stacked coils’ or ‘damper coils’ which are usually installed towards the spring seat. They are very similar to springs with a flat wound damper installed on the I.D. or an external shroud. Some springs have their coils wound tighter than others (pitch difference) which is crucial regarding the variable rate of the spring at certain heights. Other severe service or constant speed applications may use a specially qualified high tensile material that is gas nitrided to satisfy the stringent demand.
Where service life or history is unknown it is good practice to replace all valve springs.
