Valve Guides for American Diesel & HD Gas engines
The valve guide has a tough job dealing with heat transferred from the valve stem, valve stem reciprocation, minimal lubrication and minimal clearance. The Empower guide has certain robust performance features to sustain this environment.
The valve guide has a static role to support the valve stem and centre the valve on the seat. Empower valve guides use a special heat treated material to ensure stem alignment and integrity throughout their service life. Most guides contain an internal single or dual spiral groove to maintain lubrication and minimize wear. Repair guides are offered for some integral applications. Certain late model applications use sintered metal with lubricity benefits in the alloy to assist in reducing wear. This technology is a result of emission control laws, reduced working tolerances and ultra low sulphur diesel. Others use a special high strength heat treated alloy with a phosphate coated bore which works well in combating heat and friction where certain chemicals are depleted as is the case with today’s Low Ash Oils & ULSD.
Premature valve guide failure may be attributed to excessive side loading caused by uneven wear on the push pad or rocker lever bushing and/or overhead actuation mechanism, insufficient working clearance and/or final cleaning and in rare instances either ULSD and LAO’s or combination of both.
