Commission of Casting
The cast iron cylinder head provides a closure to the engine’s top end. Its maze of passages, drillings, threaded holes, tunnels and machined surfaces are necessary for the various job roles. Functions include valve and engine brake operation, (camshaft, OHC engines), fuel injection, fluid cooling and or thermostat, manifold/turbo mounting and is home to various sensors for the engine management system. Heavy duty castings are required to endure high and consistent torque settings by cylinder head bolts to ensure a fluid and gas tight seal at the cylinder block deck. Design complexity, material used and casting method are important to its sustainability in a variety of ambients, engine working temperatures and environments.
Finished bare castings include components such as valve guides and or guide posts, valve seats, passage plugs, cam bearings (OHC) etc. Loaded heads are traditionally supplied with Empower inlet and exhaust valves, valve springs, stem seals, retainers/rotators, collets, tubes, cam bearings etc. ready for installation.
