The proven power plant of industry is the diesel engine. The heart of the engine is the piston. At the fire face from zero to +500°C in seconds calls for a product that will endure. From the original design using heavy cast iron to light weight gravity die cast, then liquid forged aluminium, piston technology has come a long way. Most pistons use a single or dual ni-resist steel insert to minimise groove wear and circumferential skirt grooving to assist oil retention. High horsepower, high combustion temperatures & lower emissions has seen engineers develop the two piece articulated piston which utilises an oil cooled steel crown connected by the gudgeon to an alloy skirt. With today’s high output fuel efficient engines & ever increasing emission demands, a single piece forged steel skeletal design is now widely in use for many late model engines.

Sealing the combustion process is a tough job for any piston ring. Today’s compression rings comprise many types, profiles & technologies. Empower piston rings include electroplated chrome & thermal sprayed or moly/plasma coatings giving low friction coefficients, premium sealing, conformability & long service life. Oil rings, whether cast iron or steel with reduced width provide less friction & tangential loading but offer optimum oil & emission control. Liners & Seals
The cylinder liner is a precision component with a critically important role. Wet sleeve liners demand sealing from the combustion process, water jacket & lower crankcase. Wall strength & good wear resistance is required to sustain hundreds of millions of thermal cycles. Empower’s crack checked induction hardened liners contain a special honing process to maintain oil retention and reduce oil consumption. Liner flanges have burnish rolled fillets to increase fatigue strength of the flange.
Liners seals (‘O’rings/bands) consist of duo viton/silicon material to compliment the marriage of these precision hard parts in separating the cylinder region from the water jacket.
Gudgeon pins and circlips are a small part of the cylinder kit but have an important role in engine function. Using the highest grade base materials is a good start coupled with test procedures (physical bench tests) to ensure the product will last. Many geometries use a profiled pin bore which affords increased load resistance.
